The Open Source movement ...
Under the leadership of Bruce Perens and Eric S. Raymond, the Open Source Initiative was founded in 1998 in Palo Alto by Todd Anderson, Chris Peterson, John maddog Hall, Larry Augustin, Sam Ockman and Eric Raymond. Born in 1998 of a division of the Free Software community (community of users and developers) to conduct a policy considered more suited to the economic realities and techniques, the Open Source movement promotes freedom of access to sources of programs they use, in order to achieve an economy dependent on software sales only benefit rather than that of licenses.

Among the applications of Open Source, there are his contribution to the development of the Linux kernel and software driven by the operating system. A series of tests of Eric S. Raymond, dating from 1998, illustrates how the Open Source was seen at the time as a sort of new Eldorado. In 2005, several thousand French scientists employees are using this model, both in small companies selling specialized services as among "major" and user companies. In addition giants in the sector (IBM, Novell, HP…) base some of their technical and business strategies on Open Source approach.
